how to build a team

The secret behind the success of any organization is that its leader is backed by a great team. Is team building a creation of art or science? Honestly, it is the perfect blend of both. The process of building a great team includes both objective and subjective approaches, which screens it down to 5 main pillars that establish the foundation.

Accuracy

Just like assembling the Alpha team needs a hawk eye, assembling the members of your team is also crucial. This includes finding the right person, connecting at high vibes, and bringing them to the same page and pace of your vision and goals. The Human Capital function of your company can do miracles in finding the perfect match for your team, but the find will be right only if you know who, how, and why you want in your team.

Trust

A team is quite similar to a relationship. If there is no trust, it will not stay strong for long. When you trust your team members with their capabilities, passion and compatibility to manage things, you have successfully landed the first pillar of a great team. Do remember that every successful team in the present and past strongly feels that it is trusted by its leader proactively. When this is done, you can easily leap to the next pillar.

Leading by example is one of the best ways to gain trust in your team. Make your experience transparent, give training to your team about what you know, conduct induction of teams by introducing each professional’s experience and skills, and create a transparent communication environment. When your team sees you doing it, they will know that you are there for them, with them, and because of them.

Ownership

Whether you are the manager, director or even owner of a business, every person under you is a part owner of it too. When every person in the team is given the freedom of being responsible for their tasks, they become proactive owners of their job roles. Hence, build a team so strong that they cannot figure out who the leader is. Doing this will not only empower them to do more, but take responsibility for the mistakes without hesitation or fear.

Watch

Watching over and keeping surveillance are two similar things. The only difference is in the motive of the leader. The motive behind keeping a watch is to take care of their professional well-being, ensure transparency in communication, and be readily available whenever they need you. Freedom is the key differentiator in drawing the line between watching over and keeping a surveillance, and that is what the leader can enable throughout the team.

From a Business standpoint too, doing this can give you better insights of your functions. To ensure that you make your watch objective, you can work with each member of your team to create their KRAs and KPIs. This will also give them clarity of direction in which they need to accelerate and meet their goals.

Confidence

The true sign of a leader is not only in his/her ability to build confidence in every team member for succeeding, but also in rebuilding it in them after the phases of failure. If someone in your team made a mistake, and they take ownership of the task, it is likely that they will lose their confidence for at least a period of time.

Most of the startups today fail not due to their inability to succeed, but their inability to endure failure and learn from it. As a leader, it becomes your duty to interact with them, understand the cause, identify the roots, and rectify them for future. This is the period when intervention is needed at all levels, especially from the leaders. What is considered micro management, in turn becomes interim confidence building exercise.

It’s Strictly Give And Take

The philosophy of building a great team works both ways – If you build a great team, the team in return builds a great business. Whether there are multiple branches in your organization or just one, if you build a strong foundation of these 5 pillars, they will move towards success, taking your business hand-in-hand with them.
