Online food order delivery startup Swiggy has said that the company plans to bring on board an additional 300,000 delivery executives within the next year and a half. Swiggy co-founder & CEO, Sriharsha Majety, announced that the food delivery platform would recruit 300,000 delivery executives over the next year and a half. The addition of these delivery executives will make the total workforce at Swiggy about 500,000.
Majety was speaking at the annual tech conference by Swiggy, called Gigabytes. He added that he believes Swiggy can soon be the largest private-sector employer in India. The title is currently held by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) that has about 4.5 lakh employees presently.
Sriharsha said, “If some of our growth estimates continue, it will not be too many years before we can be the third-largest employer in the country, behind the Army and Indian Railways.” The Indian Army has about 12.5 lakh (1.25 million) people working while the Indian Railways has about 12 lakh employees.
Majety believes that Swiggy could turn into the largest private-sector employer in the country. However, the difference between these and Swiggy is that the status of the employees in the delivery executive category is different.
Delivery executives are not direct employees on Swiggy’s payroll. They are all hired on a contractual basis and are not entitled to any benefits like PF, medical, etc. that regular employees in a company receive.
Swiggy claims at present it has 2.1 lakh monthly active delivery staff. To be qualified as ‘active,’ the delivery executive should have logged in at least once a month. Swiggy’s main competitor, Zomato, has around 2,30,000 delivery executives. Companies that employ heavily besides these two are Flipkart and Amazon.
Swiggy has some very ambitious plans up its sleeve if you go by what Majety has to say; the food-delivery claims to be delivering 500 million orders a year across 500 cities in India. The company wants to have 100 million customers with at least 15 interactions a month. That situation may reach over the next decade and a half.
Another proposal the company has is to create a cluster of ‘online delivery only’ restaurants/kitchens with no dine-in facility and a kind of pod that can ensure the food being delivered to their customers in under 10 minutes.
